Gardeners Bexleyheath is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that safeguards the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, clients and members of the public. We aim to prevent accidents, work-related ill health and damage to property by managing risks systematically and continually improving our practices.

Our Health and Safety Commitment

We recognise our duty to comply with applicable health and safety legislation and to follow recognised industry good practice for gardening and landscaping work. Health and safety considerations are integrated into our planning, day-to-day operations and project reviews. We provide appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision to ensure work is carried out safely and consistently.

Management Responsibilities

Company management has overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining this Health and Safety Policy. Managers and supervisors will:

Carry out and regularly review risk assessments for gardening activities, equipment, chemicals and work locations. Put in place safe systems of work, method statements and control measures to reduce risks. Ensure employees are trained for the tasks they perform and for the equipment, tools and substances they use. Provide and maintain suitable personal protective equipment and ensure it is used correctly. Monitor working practices, conduct site inspections and act promptly where improvements are needed. Investigate accidents, near misses and incidents, and implement corrective measures to prevent recurrence.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees and regular contractors share responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment. Every team member is expected to:

Take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Follow company procedures, training and instructions, and only use equipment and substances for which they are competent and authorised. Wear the personal protective equipment provided and report any defects in PPE or work equipment. Immediately report hazards, unsafe conditions, accidents, near misses and any concerns about health and safety. Cooperate fully with incident investigations, audits and health and safety initiatives.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Before starting work at any garden, landscape or maintenance site, a suitable and sufficient risk assessment will be undertaken. This assessment will identify significant hazards such as uneven ground, sharp tools, machinery, working at height, manual handling, noise, dust, chemicals, traffic and public access. Control measures and safe systems of work will be implemented, documented where necessary and communicated to relevant staff.

Personal Protective Equipment

Gardeners Bexleyheath will provide appropriate personal protective equipment including, where relevant, safety footwear, gloves, high-visibility garments, hearing protection, eye protection, protective clothing and respiratory protection. Staff must use the PPE provided, keep it in good condition and report any damage or loss immediately so that replacements can be arranged.

Machinery, Tools and Equipment

All machinery, gardening tools and work equipment will be maintained in a safe condition and inspected at appropriate intervals. Only trained and authorised personnel may operate powered equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws and hedge cutters. Safety guards, interlocks and other protective devices must never be removed or bypassed. Equipment will be switched off and isolated before clearing blockages, adjusting or cleaning. Defective equipment will be taken out of service until repaired or replaced.

Protection of the Public and Clients

We take care to protect clients, visitors, neighbours and members of the public while work is taking place. Work areas will be organised to minimise trip hazards, and tools and materials will be stored safely. Where appropriate, barriers, cones or warning signs will be used to mark work zones. Particular attention will be paid to vehicle movements, machinery operation near access ways and noise control in residential areas.

Driving and Vehicle Safety

Vehicles used to transport staff, tools and materials will be maintained in roadworthy condition and driven by competent, authorised drivers. Loads will be secured and safe routes chosen where possible. Drivers must comply with road traffic regulations, avoid distractions and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Training, Communication and Consultation

Gardeners Bexleyheath will provide initial and refresher training in areas relevant to our work, including safe equipment use, manual handling, hazard awareness, emergency procedures and the safe use of chemicals. Health and safety information will be communicated clearly, and employees are encouraged to raise suggestions or concerns so that they can be addressed promptly.

Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported as soon as reasonably possible to a supervisor or manager.
